Phil participated in a Yamaha promotion in 2009 and picked just sixteen YAS-82Z altos to be badged as his "favorites."
In addition to being hand selected by Mr. Woods, the saxes may have been cryo-treated, making the metals stronger. Perhaps that is what gives this particular alto its unique unlacquered look.
Phil Woods switched from his Mark VI alto to the Custom Z because the Custom Zs blow easier (less resistance) and feel great on the hands; very little resistance on both fronts. This is great for players with older lungs and hands that get sore after playing for a while.
This sax has been tested and sounds outstanding. It looks and performs well with a mix of old and new pads and springs. The pearls feel sharp and new. Additional photos are available on request. We can't spot any dents or scratches. This one includes the original Yanagisawa case.
